hi all
i just noticed my tank yesterday has some really small tiny little strings abt 1 or 2mm moving across the glass looks like insects.
they are white in color & they are all over the glass all sides not huge in no. though & they are walking moving things, not really sure what they are but may be insects. i have 3 parrots with 2 sharks & 1 Texas in a 45G tank with mechanical filtration. i do a vacuum the gravel on every water change & change abt 40% after every 20 days again with treated water, the water looks clear & i have not given a water change since past 10 days just added fresh water whenever its low, i treat my water with aquarium salt & itch medicine & feed my fish twice a day & they seem to show normal behavior like they all eat properly dig around different places, hides sometime & sleep too, & do the "feed me" dance too when i am around (i mean no change in the behavior since past). the water looks Cristal clear though, i don't have any ways to measure the ammonia & nitrates i have cleaned the surface of the tank from inside to remove them but does not seems to help. i live in a moderate temp & keep the temp arnd 78-80 the heater does not work these days as the temp does not fall beyond that. any help would be highly appreciated

read in an aquarium book
read in an aquarium book that it is always better to underfeed your fish than over feed them. also to feed them several times a day. over fed fish get lazy :)
Hi.. I have had that problem
Hi.. I have had that problem before from what ive seen they are parasites that cause very little harm to the fish i have cleaned my tank many a time and have found the only way to get rid of them is to completely clean the tank. especially the gravel because they can stay alive in just the dampest of spots and wont be removed. you might notice your fish will have white spots on the fins and you will see the fish kind of flipping its fin around like its trying to shake them off.. basically just do a complete water change and wash your gravel with really hot water. its ok to use dish soap as long as its just on the glass and you completely rinse out the tank.. as for cleaning your filtration just check it if you see any of those spots you will want to clean those parts aswell. but still try to maintain enough bacteria to maintain the ammonia and ph levels in your tank and not causing further harm to your fish.
small insects
thats so nice of u reply back on the same. & yes thats the best solution i have got so far one of my friend has a good amnt of experience in keeping fish & he tells me the same thing though my parrots does not have the white spots but as u are telling me they can get it aswell if the situation goes worse & yes i would now completely clean the aquarium & would reset the tank & will let u know abt the improvements.
thanks

P.S: would really like to know more abt ur fish u can mail me some more info abt the ammonia & nitrate level through this page or on clouds09@gmail.com. it would be kind of u to do that as i really dont have much ways to measure them.
I think...
I had the same things (pink wormish things crawling on the sides of my tank about 1-2mm in length?) and It seemed to happen after I feed them those cubed freeze dried worms. They seem to go away and I think that the fish just end up eating them. Anyways, I wouldn't worry, they haven't had any effect on my fish, for better or for worse.

thanks for the reply
thanks alot for ur reply beba. i too have not observed any effect on my fish but they might be harmfull & i would soon be cleaning out the whole tank as thats what everyone is guiding me to. i would also suggest u to do the same before it turns out to be fatal for the fish.

insect/worms in water
Hi,
I have had the same problem, sounds like it anyway. I called my local fish store b/c I noticed small very thin, almost hair like "things" in my tank when I stirred up the gravel or restarting the filter. They turned out to be a type of worm "parasite" that feeds on crap and decaying food, they are a common problem w/ overfeading. They will bother some of your fish, my Green Terror started acting crazy, flying around the tank and more aggressive. I used a medication called Formalin #3, you just put a few teaspoons in the tank, wait a few days then a water change. It is a good idea to repeat the treatment once, the worms are so tiny and you don't see nearly as many as there are, they will be everywhere. No need to break down your tank or filter or wash your gravel with soap, you'll just run the risk of damaging you're biological filter. The chemical Formalin does not harm the fish or the biological filter and is safe to use on scaleless fish like clown loaches, clown knife fish, ghost knife fish, all sensitive fish ect. There are other meds you can use if you don't have they scaleless very sensitive fish. Good Luck. My Green Terror is back to his normal low key self, worms must have been bothering him.

Those sound like parasites. They can be caused from over feeding. Once you have them they are hard to get rid of. I have some in my tank. I think they came in it when i got it (was used). I have tried different medications to get rid of them but nothing seems to work. You can try to cut back on the amount you feed. When you clean your tank wipe down the insides of the glass to get them off. On the bright side i have had my tank for about a year now and my fish are all healthy and happy. It doesn't seem to affect them. I also knbow several other fish lovers that have them in thier tank as well all fish are ok.
