Cotton is Shy....

Hi! I'm new to the world of owning fish. I bought a small parrot cichlid from Wal-Mart yesterday. He lives in a 2.5 gallon tank with two fancy guppies and a pleco. When I first put him in, he seemed excited and ate a lot, but now he hides behind the plants most of the time and hasn't eaten as much. Is he ok? Is there anything I can do?

you need a much bigger tank

you need a much bigger tank for the parrot and the pleco. walmart wont take him back though i managed pets for them for 5 years. get a bigger tank right away or give him to someone with a bigger tank right away. some real petshops will take fish we take them at my shop. you need to get the pleco out of there also. you also need a heater you most likely dont have one in a tank that size. and change the water. 30% every 2 or 3 days it might help him live for a little while. use water conditioner every time you do a water change. but realy get a bigger tank or give the fish away right away. just keep your guppies.

Thats absolutely horrible.

Thats absolutely horrible. Take the fish back or buy another tank. I am not trying to be rude but no fish should live in that small a tank except a betta or one guppy. Plecos can get 2 feet and blood parrots 8 inches.

For what I've learned here

For what I've learned here, only 1 parrot needs at least 30gl tank, I guess you need to hurry and move him to a bigger one or give him to someone that has much more space in a tank. I agree with a friend here who wrote that stores will make sure they sell any animal without explaining ppl the better ways to keep pets, in this case, your parrot fish..hope u can work it out.
