Newbie

Very new to the fish world... not to mention the Parrot fish. I have two of them in a ten gallon tank.. (yea i know have to find biger tank) But guess thats what i get for buying fish at wal mart.. anyways.. i have read alot of the topics here.. but not really understanding alot of it. What is a PH leavel and why does that matter? How do i find out if my Ph leavel is ok.
also was wondering about feeding them. the food contanier says twice a day, but the clerk at the pet store (which also informed me that i have Parrot fish and not oscar's as Wal-mart is selling them as) that you only have to feed them once every couple of days.. so which is it? also was wondering how fast are they going to grow? do i need a bigger tank with in a month or 5 months? right now they are a little biger then 1/2 dollar size. any sugestions and help is much apprechated.. Tks

Re Newbie

Ok, got a testing kit. the nitrate3 tested at 20 the nitrite2 tested at 0 the total hardness was 0 the total alkalinity was 300 and the Ph was at 8.4 i am assuming i need to do a water change and get the ph down.

Ph Levels.

I did a 50/50 swap of water took out almost all the pebels and cleaned them too.. then desided to not put all of them back..think i put to many in to begain with.. also changed the filter out...going to wait an hour before testing again. cause right now the water seems kinda dirty. if the Ph levels come down to 7 or 7.5 and the other numbers stay good.. then i did it right Right?

not sure if you read.... but

not sure if you read.... but take precautions when cleaning your filter. It contains the good bacteria that break-down and decompose fish poo and uneaten food.

1> Never leave it to dry out as this would kill the good bacteria
2> Always wash it with water from the aquarium.
3> Never clean all your filters together... there should be a gap for 7 days

If your parrots were bought

If your parrots were bought from a local store and not online then chances are they are used to your high pH. Its more important to have a stable pH than a constantly changing lower one. Blood Parrots do fine at 8.4, I know someone who keeps them at 8.9 and they are fine.

ph levels..

Thanks... I was worried.. they are so cute and i don't want to losse them.

RE:

pH is what v_2rahjo said it was and i feed mine twice a day this is how i feed them(note i feed mine many differnt foods but you could only feed the flakes( or cichlid pellets are better).(i have many differnt fish to so i have lots of difernt food because for some it is to big or to small to eat)

Mon-pelts/flakes
Tues-frozen blood worms/freeze drided food
Wed-deshelled peas
Thurs-pelets/flakes
Fri-sometimes no food(its not crule it helps them) or
Sat-somesort of veggie and a little blood worms
Sunday- a tiny bit of everything

you dont have to get frozen or frezze dried because some people think they are gross but i would defintly get pelets and flakes and you can buy a bag/can of peas then i freeze them and when i want to use them i soak them in warm/hot water and then take the mushy part out of the center and feed that to them(deshelded peas) it helps with the digestive system i know other people do it on here to! hope i helped

okay you will need a new tank as soon as you can and if you can i would buy the size they need for adulthood . If you are not going to get anymore with they will need a 40 gallon tank minumum(30per the first fish and 10 for each extra one) or you can just work your way up to that.
Hope i helped!

PH - It is the measure of how

PH - It is the measure of how acidic or basic your water is. A neutral PH is 7. Parrots like a PH of around 7.5
To test your water for PH, Ammonia, Nitite and Nitrate get a water testing kit.
You need to feed your parrot twice a day.
