Hello, everyone. I am near tears. Last night I spent 30mins gently holding my bright orange Blood Parrot, Kizzy, near bubbles from an air stone and tube. I had her in a hospital tank, along with her younger buddy, LuLu (for company).
Kizzy's gills were struggling for air and she was floating otherwise motionless upside down~ whereas all the other fish were fine. Kizzy is the largest(about 5"; a few ounces heavy) so I assumed her lungs required more air but didn't know if that was the only problem so I set up the hospital tank. She got better. Until ....
All was fine, then sometime during the night the batteries died on my portable air pump. I woke up to find Kizzy AND LuLu suffering. I immediately placed them back in the original tank (a downgrade from 60gal to 16gals), then raced to the store for batteries, a bubbler, and an electric air pump! The new pump is good upto 50gal, plus the portable should be plenty! However...
Long story shortened: LuLu is fine (keeping in close proximity to Kizzy at all times. Protecting her??). But Kizzy has not recovered.
I had set up a net to keep her boyant and out of the sand but by the time I returned from the store, her eyes had changed to a stale almost white stare. Even though her gills seem to be huffing and puffing (the net is now near the max flow of oxygen bubbles), she is not moving. Is she suffering or just having a slow recovery? I need to know how to euthanize her because I don't want her to suffer if this is not a recovery stage.....
Please help soon! >> P.S. I have had these BloodParrots for almost 2years. The tank is well maintained and not overcrowed. :-(

LuLu is a tough cookie
Hi, everyone. I've been out of touch for a while taking care of LuLu and normal day-to-day business. LuLu got much better and spent about a week back in her regular tank w/ tankmates. I gave her to a friend with an appropriate size tank and fish population. My special thanks to "femacle1" who helped me understand that Kizzy and LuLu's small size was not a stroke of luck (forever cute & tiny BPs) but was a growth stunt caused by the water pressure of having a smaller tank, which in effect, hurt their chances to grow and live long lives. Well, Kizzy is in a happier place (all fish go to heaven); and LuLu is in a more fitting home. Thank you for your caring. Enjoy your finny friends!
you dont seem to understand.
you dont seem to understand. we are trying to tell you the size of the tank was the problem. they didnt grow fast because they need space to grow. without the space they become stunted and they die. if the tank was bigger you would not have lost her. it is easyer to take care of a bigger tank with less fish then a tiny tank with too many. no matter how well you take care of a tank that is too small it is still too small. some fish will seem fine for awhile in a small tank but sooner or latter it gets to them. buy the way my fish have never been aggressive either but i would never they too keep them in a tank that is that small. it is like you having to live your whole life in a closet. we are not saying you didnt try to care for them. we are saying all you needed was a bigger tank. you had one i cant see why you gave it up just to stuff them all in a tiny tank and make them suffer. hope you can see what we are trying to say. if you want a small tank you should keep small fish. dainos.. tetras.. barbs.. livebearers.. anything else is too big. sorry again good luck.
RE
a 16 gallon is way to small!! You need to get a bigger tank or get rid or you Blood parrot. 1 blood parrot needs 30 gallons to itself then an extra 10 gallons eachone after that you you need at leats a 40 gallon for all you fish you have now and you dont get anymore. Your fish probly feels like they are trapped in a closet and thats why shes sad. Its like a jail cell. It reminds me of the show on animal planet where they resuce there poor animals that people dont take care of proberly.
This is my tank(do the math and see all the extra room)
4 blood parrots(oldest is 1 1/2 years)
3 meduim angels(genticly small donegrowning)
2 rosey barbs
2 small bottom fedders
I have a 90 gallon and that is like the minnimum i can have. Know think of your fish it is crule to keep them in there and you want to add anougher big fish!!
I am not trying to be mean so if this hurts your feelings im sorry you just need a reality check ans somone needs to stand up for these fish. So im sorry but it is the truth.
LuLu a bit better...not great, but ok.
Thank you everyone for your compassion (either for me or my BP). I had to bring LuLu back to a hospital tank. I expected that all the back and forth between tanks would stress her completely; but she is doing just a tiny bit better than last night. At least she ate a tiny bit of food (frozen blood worms proved easier for her to get at and more of a treat than mini cichlid pellets, so I went with that~ plus no presoak wait time). Eventhough the water checked back fine yesterday, I did a partial change, replaced the filter, and removed much of the sand (possible waste deposits contaminants underneath??).
Anyway, I am a little exhausted after a long day at work and it took a lot to give all the extra nurturing to LuLu between redundant tank maintenance and keeping a watchful eye (although its well deserved). When she completely stabilizes I am interested in giving LuLu away to someone with a larger tank and a healthy, playful group of tank mates for her. Let me know if you are interested.
On a different note: Although I appreciate all the feedback and tough love given regarding the clinical, albeit good attempts at being heartfelt, "How-To's" and "Told You So's" for Blood Parrots...Kizzy and LuLu were always playful, friendly fish towards one another and tank mates. They did not fight or become aggressive or homicidle like some of the awful tank stories I've read about on this and other websites. So, again, I urge you to consider the temperment and likes & dislikes of your individual BPs. No two BP seem to be alike. My two were just as social and vibrant in a 16gal bow-front as they were in the past in a 60gal rectangular tank. They were never shy or combative. They did not grow in size quickly at all (Kizzy approx 4" or 5" including tailfin; LuLu about 3") I purchased them very small (although Kizzy was a tad larger). I do, however, believe I failed Kizzy by being so busy with work, errands, etc that I didn't exactly notice that maybe she had been ill earlier and this may not have been as sudden as it seemed. That, and because her energy level, appetite, and color never gave sign or symptoms of trouble... Well, it's just LuLu now and her gang of sidekicks. We will make the best of it. I realize now that I am not able to focus so much effort to my aquarium (however small) as I had in the past, so please let me know if you are interested in adopting a sweet, active BP once she has recovered. Thanks.
What area are you in?
What area are you in?
awww I'm so sorry.......but
awww I'm so sorry.......but yeah a 16 gal will only be good for the parrot that didn't pass....and nothing else, sorry if that's not what u wanna hear
you have all this in a 16 gal
you have all this in a 16 gal ? {other fish are: red tail shark, rainbows, pletco, majestic beta, majestic snail, and a spotted catfish (not Cori)... all are tank veterans for at least past 7months} just that is more then enough for a 16 gal. and you still have 1 parrot. dont add more you have too much. just your 1 parrot that is left should have 30 gals. this is most likely why the other one got sick and died. if you really care about them they need a bigger tank. how would you like to spend your whole life in one small room with 8 or more other ppl. and by the way 5 to 6 inches in a 16 gal is like being in a closet not even as good as being in a room. sorry but it is true think about. would you want someone to do that to you. and you said you dont even keep it full !!! that makes it even smaller.
LuLu not well... or depressed
Thanks for the tough love. I supposed there was room because there were no decoratives to take up space (just black sand and a neon thingy they like to poke at and push around). I only have 1each of the other fish (there were 2rainbow) and everyone seems to do well. The pletcos I give away in exchange for a baby pletco everytime they get about 3". Everyone else in the tank is max size (still tiny) except my BP. LuLu is actually depressed. It's obvious~ and sad. She stays in one corner of the tank at the top, starring at her own reflection. Her color is faded, which is strange because she was originally a brilliant yellow until 2weeks after Kizzy was first introduced to the tank (1.5+ years ago). She then turned a bold orange to match Kizzy, and the two were inseperable right until earlier today when we lost Kiz. Right now the bubbler sits flush to the tank back, but doesn't appear to crowd the bow-front tank. Maybe that's just from the outside looking in?? Anyway, LuLu isn't eating. Water checked back fine. I'm stuck and need advice that, I guess of course, doesn't include adding another fish.
turned the light off
I read through another post that turning the tank light off may calm LuLu and encourage her to eat privately?? Sure hope you guys are right. I can't take another loss. And, yes, many people have experiences, or education on BloodParrots but if you haven't noticed that these little BP's have personalities and are very individual so far as acclamation to different environments, community fish, or foods~ then for all that "knowledge," those people are missing the beauty of caring for these unique & dynamic cuties.
???
???
I'm sorry for your lose. Did
I'm sorry for your lose. Did you not have an electric bubbler in the first place or was it a spare for the other tank?
Thank you, Chris :'-(
I had given away my 60gal tank and all the fish except my two BP because I've had them so long. The portable was bought to transport the giveways to my friend's place, she returned it. No, I didn't have a bubbler on the 16gal for the past year- just the filtration system. I kept the water level somewhat lowered to produce bubbles from the filter system. I was told that was just fine for the smaller tank. Everyone (fish) has been doing great for a year with that same setup. The thing with Kizzy was a surprise. I'm going to get my water tested in an hour or so, but LuLu is behaving shy and seperate from the other fish (in mourning??). I wouldn't normally have replaced Kizzy so quickly but I'm considering buying LuLu another playmate so the tank can recover emotionally?? But after what I've learned about the dye process~ I don't want to support that system by getting more BP. :-\ What is a good tank mate for LuLu that grows moderately slow? Upto 5-6" tops because I won't have a larger tank again anytime soon. Thank you again. {other fish are: red tail shark, rainbows, pletco, majestic beta, majestic snail, and a spotted catfish (not Cori)... all are tank veterans for at least past 7months}
Maybe a firemouth but I
Maybe a firemouth but I really wouldn't add anything because the 16 is just to small.
You're right.
Yes, I agree with you and femacle1. I won't add any additional fish.
Kizzy died.
I buried her a foot deep in the backyard and put a heavy board over it (so no cat or racoon could dig it up).
