black spots
an experience blood parrot owner can tell the difference between"black spot disease" which can be remedied by improving conditions for that fish, and "black spots"which can be anything at all, if you know the difference, go ahead and buy, if not, read everything you can, seek advice then make your own decisions
chris is right. in a pet shop
chris is right. in a pet shop parrots have spots sometimes. it does not always mean that they are sick. i own a shop and when the parrots first come in they always have spots. some only a few some a lot. most of the time its just due to the stress of shipping. in my shop sometimes it goes away in a day or two and some time it takes a week or two. they are not sick though. i keep parrots at home i can tell when they are sick. we have been open almost a year now and i have only lost 2 or 3 parrots in all of that time. and 2 of them didnt have any black on them when they died. the ones that we lost looked sick when they came in and never got better. saddly it happens in a shop. you never know what they will send you. but all the others have been fine so its not true that you should not but a parrot because of spots. if it seems fine otherwise all it needs is a good home in a good tank and the spots go away. i have about 20 parrots in right now and only 2 still have a few spots and they are going away. oh and by the way black spots on a parrot are not unknown we....everyone that has had parrots for awhile... all know why they get them.
Yes its one parrot for 30
Yes its one parrot for 30 gallons but its not long term, they need a 55 gallon long term.
Its not a disease, its just something that happens to Blood Parrots when they get stressed. The stress is most commonly from water quality. Start by changing 50% of the water. It could also be that the parrot has something like Ick but is not always the case, it could just be something random. My guess is water quality.
"This is not normal or healthy and you should never buy Blood parrot cichlids that display signs of black spot disease." is a load of crap because of course you are gonna see a parrots at the store with block spots on them because they are gonna get stressed being moved around a lot. I bought one of mine because he had been at the tank from Walmart for a month alone and was starting to get ick. He was covered with black spots so I took him home and treated him and not he is one of my best parrots.
"load of crap"
So, you are telling this new parrot owner- to go ahead and buy fish with unknown black spots, at the risk of contaminating the tank? Seems- irresponsible.
The fish could could not have
The fish could could not have spots and be sick. Also they have already bought the parrot and so the tank is already contaminated anyways.
Also if think about it, its probably a new tank so there is ammonia in the tank because its not an established tank. Ammonia and Nitrites cause fish stress and too much nitrates will as well. Plus the tank is too small and so the ammonia/nitrites are gonna build up faster so for ass he/she know they could have a very poor water quality right now. They are a hand full of things that could be wrong with the tank and not the fish that are causing stress so don't come on here and say to me that I'm full of crap because you read something on some random website.
No, what I am saying is that
No, what I am saying is that just because it has black spots doesn't mean its sickly. Now if the fish has ick and black spots thats different. There could be 2 in a tank and both are male so they are fighting and both have black spots. It could be nothing. I'm just saying examine the situation before you make you decision. I have bought 2 that had black spots, one had ick and the other didn't. Both are happy and healthy.
Black Spots
Blood Parrot cichlids are the only fish that can get Black spot disease. This disease is very common among parrot cichlids and displays itself as black spots on the fish. This is not normal or healthy and you should never buy Blood parrot cichlids that display signs of black spot disease. This disease can be a result of poor water quality and effected fish will get better if you improve the water quality. If the water quality isn’t poor the fish can get better after a few days. Black spots can however also be a sign of that your fish is in spawning mood.
An aquarium intended for blood parrot cichlids should be decorated with a soft bottom substrate. Use bogwood and rocks to create hiding places for the fish since they otherwise can be quite shy. They need a large aquarium due to their size, a parrot cichlid can grow to be 10 inches. They should not be kept in aquariums smaller than 50 gallon. Blood parrot cichlid requires good filtration since they can put a large strain on the water quality. Large weekly water changes are also required. A pH of 6.5-7.5 is to be preferred.
