Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

Hey guys!
So I'm going to be moving my 2 BPs&pleco into my cycled 55 gallon tank this Thursday (yay!), and I was wondering about a few things.

First off, I looked and called around town for a jellybean parrot, and no one has even heard of such a thing. So I decided to get a male pink convict to try to make my own! (I also really love the pink-ness of them =) He will be in on Thursday, the same day I plan on moving my BPs to my 55. I've read that it's a good idea to put all fish together in a new tank at the same time, so they can each claim their own territories. Is this true?

Next, everything I have read about the convict (except for on this site) says they are very aggressive and will attack any other fish. I'm hoping this is not true, b/c I'd really like to keep him... I'm wondering if I should also get one other fish so he's not the "3rd wheel". Do you think this would be a good idea, and what type of fish would you recommend? I was thinking of maybe a flowerhorn (do they all have the humps on their head, or just the males?)... Also, should I get a female, male, or would it matter much?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated =)

Do not get a flowerhorn... it will eat anything that fits into his mouth.. be it a male or a female.... they can even bit off your finger.... BPs are soo NICE to control a Flowerhorn. The hump of a flowerhorn would depend on your choice of food for the flowerhorn

Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

It can seriously bite of your finger???? I thought about getting one... Please say your joking...

Re: Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

my 1 month old flower horn pinched my dad's finger... she is 4-5 months old now.. and i can see some teeth like formation in her... i just love her.. she would not let me put my hand in her tank....

Re: Re: Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

Mines the opposite of that, he is afraid of my hand and won't bite me. Oscars can be worse though.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice neede

Chris... u know what... my Oscars were lazy.... they would not be bothered about my hand or anything in their tank.... heh he he ... but my FLowerhorn is super aggresive... if i try to scare her by dipping a net... she would start biting it...

What other fish besides a firemouth would be ok?

Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

Ahh ok, maybe it was the firemouth I was thinking of.

I really like the idea of getting another convict, but I wonder if the male convict would breed with the female BP if there was a female convict in the tank... what do you think?

Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

I don't know, my female parrot that breed with another parrot wasn't interested in breeding with my male convict who has breed with another convict. As soon as I moved the female in with another of my male parrots that got busy right away. So your might not want to breed with the convict since she has with the other parrot, maybe if the male convict was larger than the male parrot. So they would probably pair up with their type of fish but I can say for sure. You could also get a gold or green severum.

Re: Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

I think you have me mistaken with someone else =P My BPs have not bred before.

I'll prob end up getting a firemouth... they are very pretty!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

No, I was just assuming since you said you had a male and female then they have bred, because its the easiest way to tell gender.

Re: Moving my BPs to a larger tank- advice needed =)

Convicts are only aggressive when they are breeding so unless it pairs off with your female parrot (which would be awesome), you will see no more aggression than you see from the parrots. Flowerhorns will be too big for that tank if there are other fish in it, only the male get the big humps (mine is really starting to develop). You could add another convict (a female) and let them go at it like rabbits. The parrots will eat the babies so you wouldn't have to worry about over crowding. Or you could a firemouth, they have nice color when they mature.

Its a really good idea to add them all at once as long as it is cycled.
