Parrot Breeding

Ok I am new to the hobby so dont get mad at me asking this question. I know it may not be ethical but I am just asking. Is it possible to inject fish with hormones to make them sterile? Isnt that how they do it for these parrot fish? They inject the water with a hormone that makes the males sterile and then the hormone wares off. And do these hormones effect the overall health of the fish? Is it possible to get these hormones?

I wouldnt do it anyways but I was just wondering. Again I love my parrots and I'd never risk hurting them but I was just wondering.

Re: Parrot Breeding

Blood Parrots are a man-made fish. Like the Purbred cats, and purbred dogs are in animals. People took different cats or dogs (depending on the species) of course) and put them together to come up with what they wanted the specific breed to look like. This has taken many years with animals.
Two different cichlids were breed to create BPs. There is info on this website about it. For some reason the males have just been sterile, as I understand.
Since they have been around longer, they are finding that some males are now not sterile. It is a possability someday, many will be able to breed. I read somewhere, even if two BPs were bred together, the fry would not all, if any be BPs. They would look like the parent fish in the beginning. Or a cross.

Re: Parrot Breeding

im assuming u mean to make them fertile? im sure there r somewhere, but not likely to find them unless u work in a lab. u picked a tough fish to breed. thats pretty much it. since these fish werent really meant to be, then its gonna be tough to breed them. just try to enjoy the ones u have. im sure u will. and sometimes its just like it is for humans, u get so anxious to have babies that the stress prevents that from happening. ur female isnt even grown yet. just keep ur tank tip top and at the right temp ( mine is 82 and they lay eggs) and let them do there thing. they will when there ready im sure :) it took mine months from the time i put them in there to the time they laid eggs. but if urs do, and they turn white please remove them. it means nothing is gonna happen but messing up ur water quality. im sorry if that happens :(
