Rosey Barbs
I got 3 rosey barbs to go with my parrot fish. They seem to be doing well so far. I love the way the rosey barbs school & the parrot swims casually though the school. It breks up the bars for a second & soon they are back together.
Re: Rosey Barbs
im so happy it all worked out! :) post a pic if u can
Out to Dinner
My wife took me out to dinner tonight. It is my birthday, :))) The restaurant had many built in tanks, of course much larger than mine. One must have had @ least 10 parrot fish in it.I went over, not only to admire them, but to see what they had for tank mates. You were right. ( large tetras ) But they also had many kinds of gourmais, both large & small.
Re: Out to Dinner
i also have 2 gouramis :) (golden) they all get along. but i wouldnt recomend kissing gouramis or dwarf, even though they r soooo gorgeous! but with ur size tank i would stick to a couple tetras maybe 3 of ur choice just because of space. the parrot might feel cramped and start picking on things if u have anything bigger in there. gouramis get to be about 3'' long and thats alot in a small space. there r alot of different kinds of tetras out there though, some r really beautiful. and happy b-day!!!
Tetras
What about rosey ( sp ) barbs ?
Re: Tetras
barbs usually work, just make sure they stay small! cause some barbs can get really big, like tinfoils. and only get like 3 for ur size tank. but barbs usually get along with bps :)
How Many ?
How many tiger barbs would you put in a 30 gallon with a parrot fish & a pleco ? I was thinking 5. Is that too many ?
Re: How Many ?
i would go for 3, just because of space, but thats just me. also just about any kind of tetra would go well as long as there big enough.
Large Tetras
You said that just about any large tetra would do,but if I don't pick the same kind, I won't get the schooling effect I want, right ? 3 tiger barbs were recommended. I'm still leaning toward 5.What do you think ?
Love Tiger Barbs
I love tiger barbs & the way they school. They are good in odd numbers.( 3, 5, etc. )How many would you put in the 30 gallon? Don't you find them a bit aggressive? I know, when I had my community tank, they would not leave the angels alone. Speaking of angels, would they make good tank mates ?
tankmates
no angels, tiger barbs can be fin nippers, someone has some on this site, cant remember who?
Re: tankmates
I have read in plenty of other places that Angelfish go well with BPs
angels as tankmates
i love angelfish, but let me explain why I would think twice about recommending them as tankmates for BP,firstly, the person in question has a 30 gall tank , an angel really needs 10 galls , so you should have at least 40galls, plus, an angel likes a tall tank rather than a long one, both are cichlids which establish territories (although with only one of each you would avoid the aggression that comes with spawning), a parrot is pretty tolerant of a wide range of PH, whereas an angel needs it to be between 6.5-7, it also needs the water to be on the low side, between 2-10, an angel also doesn't like too much filtration, whereas with a parrot you cant have too much, angels benefit from live plants, most parrots dig them up,so, for someone new to blood parrots,I wouldn't recommend one, but if all the other conditions are right, the two can coexist
RE: angels as tankmates
I have to agree with shaz on this. In general rule of the fish that do well together, cichlids are normally good with cichlids. Most of the other tropical fish are better in a community tank, as normally they are less aggressive and they need the same water chem. and temps to be healthy. Of course not all other fish can be in a community tank, that was an example of the fact they have the same needs.
I know several on this site have tropical fish with cichlids and they seem to be working.
When it comes to angels, they are delicate in the first place. And I would think those fins would look pretty interesting to a BP. Angels don't tolerate the water required for a BP well. I too, remember someone having an angel with a BP. That has to be a almost miracle. :D
I don't know if my BP is really mean to tank mates or what. She terrorizes the two albino catfish that are in the tank with her. When she lays eggs, I think she would kill them, but she doesn't have enough time, she has to get back to the eggs. I can't imagine the fun she would have if little fish were swimming in schools around her! (Don't want to see That :( She is the only fish in a 60 gal tank. Plus two beat up catfish.
It appears some BPs are better with tank mates than others.
Just remember when you add fish with your BP, you have to add fish that won't hurt them. Plus fish BPs won't hurt. Then fish that require similar water conditions. Then the big surprise BPs get big fast and harmonal. They think they have to protect their territory and soon it is the whole tank. Many other fish do the same, so think of not getting fish that get huge to go with your BP. Down the road the fish in your tank will look very different. They need to get along then, too.
In the case of cichlids with cichlids. Many types are mean or aggressive. The BP doesn't have defense and it is hard to make this work too. It can work, as we have heard, but each BP is different.
Once you get the extra fish, if they don't work out, you will have to be ready to take care of them in another way. Such as another aquarium.
Mixing these fish is not really easy, sometimes you may be lucky, but the same situation might not work with another BP.
I hate to say it, but when my BP gets bored, she comes up with another game. Chase the catfish. She is always amused, when she is not laying eggs. :(
She is a great fish, can't believe her personality. She seems to adore me. Except when she has eggs, then she hates the world. :S
My point is, realize adding fish to the tank could cause more trouble than it is worth.. Or work, you have to do it just right, and be lucky.
BUT PLEASE any new fish you add to your tank, quarantine any new fish for maybe a month, before exposing your BP. Not doing so is asking for trouble, and a sick BP,
Good Luck with your additions :)
tankmates
any of the large tetras (giant danios or blue congos etc,as long as they cant fit into your parrots mouth whole,) need to be kept in groups of various numbers, corys are nice but also bottom feeders,
Re: Tank Mates
i have tiger barbs with mt parrots. and 1 albino cory cat.
