polly

you know, I really think from that pic it looks like an inflamed egg tube, it now looks more inflamed than black, how does it look to you, inflamed or still black?,an inflamed egg tube can also look dark brown, and can look completly different to a normal one, I dont care what the pet shop says, they are often wrong, tail length and notched heads are not reliable indicators of sex, you just cant be sure of sex unless you can vent them , have you treated for constipation as suggested, it wont harm her/him, the treatment for inflamed breeding tube is almost the same, with addition of general antibiotic to prevent secondary infection, If he /she was mine, Id get the epsom salts now, it works on either problem, if you do have two females with no males in your tank, it can make the incidence of egg bound more common, starve for a week, (although a little pea lax can be given if he will eat, but nothing else, ) what do others think from this new pic,

Re: polly

it definitly the breeding tube, and does look swollen and inflamed. i would do what shaz says or try to find someone in ur area that u can take him to (not a pet store!) like a vet. and pet stores r really bad about sexing fish. i thought i had two males the whole time then found out 1 was a girl and now there laying eggs all the time. and do any of ur other fish have the white bumps?

Hi kickazzkatie, I ventured

Hi kickazzkatie,
I ventured into the next town and visited a small store called Oscar's Aquatics. The owner; Lisa is very knowledgeable on tropicals. She did a water reading for me. My nitrates are up a bit ; I recently did a major water change (75%). I stressed Polly.

She gave me something for internal parasites. We also put aquarium salt in the tank and some frozen 'fish' laxative. She agrees that polly is a girl with an inflamed breeding tube. She also thinks she is either constipated or....internal parasites. The whited dot seems to have burrowed into Polly's head and it has caused an indentation. She is afraid it may be 'hole in the head' or a fungus. Either way: NOT GOOD news. I have warmed the tank up considerably and will wait to see what works.
Thank You for your input.

Re: Hi kickazzkatie, I ventured

well i really hope it all works out. i think polly has captured the hearts of everyone on the site. let us know how she progresses, it seems like ur doing all u can.

Hi Shaz, It actually looks

Hi Shaz,
It actually looks 'flesh'colored. It is starting to change to a whitish color now. My tank is 35 gal. How much epsom salts should I put in? I have also noticed this morning that h/she also has a white bump on the forehead that wasn't there yesterday?! He has never had a problem before! I am afraid that introducing two pearl gouramis last week has brought in some unwanted disease. (He had the growth starting already - apparently it started out as a red bubble, my daughter said)

polly

I,m convinced he is a she, the egg tubes normal colour is white,it sounds as if it may be improving, it may not need anything, just give the pea lax for the next day or so,then reasses, the growth on the head, does it look like cotton wool, fuzzy? that may be cotton wool fungus, often secondary to another infection, or does it look like a crater or ulcer, epson salts 1/2 teaspoon per gall or just under, but I,d say, 10 teaspoons if you decide to go with that,

Re: Polly's Growth

well my parrot has laid eggs and the tube looked nothing like that. it is in the same spot but yours looks like its inflamed.

Re: Re: Polly's Growth

Can a worm be that large?

Re: Re: Re: Polly's Growth

I think tape worms are that large in fish. I am really at a loss. I'm trying to find photos of tape worms to post so we can compare them.

Shaz had suggested taking him to a fish store. Can you do that, or maybe a vet? I would be worried that it's blocking him from going to the bathroom. Plus, it's obviously not normal. Something is for sure not right. I don't want to worry you. But, I'm really concerned for him.

I know this is a long shot. But, if you happen to live in the Los Angeles area, I know a place that you can take him to.

I've been looking on the internet for anything remotely close to this. But, I haven't found anything. I'll keep looking. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your little guy:)

Thanks so much Peanut, I have

Thanks so much Peanut,
I have emailed a photo to a fish person at the local pet store. I don't know of any vet that works on fish? I could perhaps email a photograph to them? I am going to try the epsom salts. I also have another problem going on with the 'white bump' on his forehead!!

Re: Polly's Growth

I have photo editing software, although I'm not very good at using it. Is this any better?

That is perfect! Thank YOu Peanut:)

Re: Polly's Growth

theres no chance ''he'' (?) laid eggs?

Re: Re: Polly's Growth

He is definitely a 'He' according to the pet store. His top fin reaches his tail easily and he has a notched head. His partner was different - she also laid all the eggs.
