Polly needs your help.

Hello Fish Lovers. I have been reading through every post trying to find information leading to my Baby's problem. He is a blood red parrot, about 7 years old now and always been healthy. He has a HUGE 'plug' extruding from his 'anus'. It won't let go and he is now not eating. This has been present for about 4 days now. I have been reading everything I can find and I have decided it must be constipation. The pet store told me it could be parasites, but It is so big and doesn't move...
I now know that I should have been supplementing his diet with peas and live plants in his tank. (Used to put plants in, but he destroyed everything!)

Question. Since he is not eating, is it possible to 'pull' out the thing or squeeze it out gently? Can anyone help me out...soon please? I am so afraid of losing Polly. Thanks for your input; it is much appreciated.

Polly

Hey Shaz,
What is LFS? I live in a very small rural town and the only place I could think of was the local pet store. They are not knowledgeable on any fish. I am a ferry ride away from vancouver. I only have all of you to count on right now. I hope the new picture I posted on a different post, is better.

mines breeding tube got really big when she was laying eggs. and she didnt eat or come out of hiding. but to b safe id follow everyone elses advice

Re: Polly needs your help.

I'm with Shaz on this one. Treating your fish for constipation whether she has it or not, isn't going to hurt her.

When we feed our fish flakes or pellets without soaking them first, they will swell inside of the fish and cause a blockage. Not having enough fiber in their diet will also cause a blockage. However, that would be inside of the fish. I've never heard of it sticking out of the fish. A blockage will also cause the fish to bloat. Is she swollen at all?

If you're brave, you could net her and get a better look or even lightly touch it. But, you would have to be very very gentle. you don't want to cause injury to her. This would at least give you a idea as to what it is. You'll know if it's food/waste, because it will fall off. But, I gotta tell you. I'm thinking it's not waste. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

The photo is blurry. Maybe you could post a photo that's a bit more clear.

I dont know if it is constipation or not, your pic isn't clear to me,does her abdomen look swollen, is she swimming OK? BUT, I would treat it as such, if its something else treating it for constipation wont do any further harm, !st, stop feeding for a week, your fish wont feel like food anyhow, this isnt cruel and may save her,if there is a blockage the food will just keep on backing up and that could kill her, next, I would recommend 1/2 teaspoon of Epsom salts per gall to your tank,(I think proper name is magnesium sulphate), once the blockage has cleared, and if eating you can try soaking pellets overnight in Castor oil, and include the Pea Lax in her diet,If anyone has a better idea please post as its not something that my fish have a problem with, and please let us know how you get on

Polly's Growth

Hi again,
I have posted another photograph of my 7 year old Parrot fish's growth or plug that is extending from his anus. I am hoping that someone will have knowledge of such a thing and advice on how I can treat him. He is not eating and just hanging out in a corner. He still comes over to see me when I approach his tank. I have tried putting cut peas into his tank, but he isn't interested; which is highly unusual! He is a voracious eater. Please help! Thanks
guess I cannot post another photograph after all...

poor polly

you know, if he was mine I,d bag him and whip him down to your LFS (if you have one that you trust) it could be parasitic but the only thing I can think of is roundworm and that does look like a worm,

polly/inflamed egg tube

I meant that there's no mistaking roundworm because they look like worms,I dont think its an inflamed egg tube, they look red and sore, really there's no mistaking that,

Re: poor polly

Shaz, I've never seen a breading tube. So, I have no idea what it looks like. Is it possible the problem is a inflammed breeding tube?
