Algae Problem - please help!

Hi there,

So I have a fairly new tank with 4bps and a pleco (46g) and everything was going great. The tank was cycling and v clean/attractive until one day... ALGAE! and BAD. So I noticed that the water started to look a little cloudy but I had been doing regular water changes, etc and everything was basically ok. Then one day the water started to take on a little bit of a greenish color. Within 3-5 days the tank turned completely green and very cloudy. I read online that i should be doing 20% water changes each day to get rid of the condition. Does anyone have any advice? Is this harmful to my fish? I started to do this but I do not see a big change. Is there some chemical I should try? I prefer to use chemicals as a last resort because I hear they are bad for fish but if that's what's needed I am all ears - thanks!

Algae Problem- Please help!

If you have your tank by a window or whear sunlight can come in it algae will start forming.
But maybe you should get another algae eater and see if that will help out Iam new on here so
Iam only trying to help lol.

Do you have your tank near a window or does it get any sunlight throughout the day? That can also give you algae.

Re: Algae Problem - please help!

sounds like ur doing a great job, keep it up and see what happens. if it doesnt clear up u can try to change light bulbs. i just have regular ''all-glass aquarium'' lights and iv never had algea. and real plants r always a good idea! i love to watch them grow, but sometimes cichlids can dig and uproute plants. i havent had a problem with mine doing that though. good luck!

I aggree

Algae will grow if given to much light and the pleo is not doing a good job of cleaning that tank from algae. ine is with some help of a rainbow shark in a 55

Algea

two ways things that algea need, light and nutrients, so try cutting down on light and make sure not to overfeed, it looks bad but shouldent be harmfull, if hungry your fish will nibble at the algea, keep up the water changes, it will take time, the use of chemicals could easily give you more problems on top of your present one

Re: Algae Problem - please help!

what kind of light do u have? sometimes people use grow lights without knowing and that can do it. also if u dont give enough dark time algea can grow.

Re: Re: Algae Problem - please help!

You know I thought the light might be a problem it is a coralife (has 2 bulbs a colormax which is supposed to bring out the natural color of the fish and the other daylight bulb, all advertised for freshwater aquariums). Is this something I should change? If this is some kind of a growing light would adding real plants help? Unfortunatly the person at the pet store didnt mention anything other than this light/bulbs was appropriate for all freshwater aquariums. I didnt see anything on the box that indicated it was a grow lamp either. Is there a different type of lighting you would recommend? Another thing I did was change the "on" cycle to only allow 6 hrs max light (I do think they were on too long) - I bought a timer as well. The fish don't seem to mind being out of the light longer so I am hoping this and frequently changing 20% of the water will clear up the problem.
