Filter for a 46g tank - any thoughts?

Hi I am purchasing a 46g tank for my BPs and wanted to know what filter suggestions are out there. I understand one should overshoot in terms of filtration and these are somewhat "messy" fish, but there are just so many products out there it is overwhelming. I want to offer my BPs the best environment possible. I have been reading some on biowheel technology which sounds interesting to me. Does anyone have an opinion on these filters? Any specific brands? Thanks, AandA

Re: Filter for a 46g tank - any thoughts?

I have used both the canister filters and the waterfall type filter and found that I was cleaning the tank more often with the waterfall type. I currently fun 2 fluval 404's on my 60 gallon and I can go weeks without cleaning it and when I do there is very little coming out of the gravel. You could run one fluval 405(the current model) on your tank and it should work great for you.

Thanks for this - would you know if the fluval leaks?

I have a 75 gallon tank for my BP's and I have 2 of the waterfall type filters that are both rated for 75 gallon tanks so I technically have double the filtration. They do not have the bio wheel as I find it somewhat pointless if you just rinse the cartridges out with the same temp. of water as the tank, it won't kill off all the benifical bacteria and therefore there is no need for the bio wheel. Others may disagree but that is strictly my opinion. My Aunt has the biowheel on her filters and most of the parts have broken off for it and they will not work properly now. Also they have discontinued her filter model so she cannot replace the parts either. The extrnal filtration also works well but with my previous aquarium, I had an FX5 and found it a huge pain to clean as it was so heavy and the water would leak out the tubing when I disconnected it for cleaning. Out of all the filter types I have had over the years, I definitely prefer the simple waterfall type with the removable cartridges. The are extremely quick and easy to clean and inexpensive to replace if need be. Also you don't have to worry about leaks as you do with some of the other types.
P.S. I bought my filters at Walmart for $55 each. They each take 2 cartridges and a replacement pack of 3 cartridges is only $8. That is in Canada.
