new and need help

Hi, I'm new to BP's and I'm currently in the process of cycling a new tank for them. I have some very basic fish knowledge, I've had a beta in a 1 gal tank for over a year that just passed away last week. I'm aware of all the proper ph, nitrite, ammonia, and nitrate levels that are needed for the tank, but i'm wondering what would be the best way to start. should i just buy bp's and put them in the tank, or should i buy some cheap fish and start the cycling with them? I was planning on getting 2 BP's so i know that would definitely affect the ammonia in the tank

basically i'm new and lost and i'm just wondering what would be the best way to cycle my new tank for my hopefully soon new addition of BP's :]

Re: new and need help

thanks for the help! i'll probably have tons of more questions once i obtain my BP's. Hopefully the cycling process goes well for me.

Cycling

I agree, some people do add some cheaper fishes to cycle the tank but this is unneccessary.Feeding everyday and adding some plants(whether keeping it planted or not) will all help the biological process.

Re: new and need help

With the exception of my very first tank, I've cycled all of my tanks without fish in them. There's no need to put the fish through the torture of cycling the tank.

Just set your tank up and get it running as if you have fish in it. Then feed the tank fish food daily. That will provide the ammonia source for your tank to cycle. I normally turn the heater up as high as it will go during the cycling assuming that will speed the process along.

Once you have your ammonia and nitrite at zero and have nitrates, your tank is cycled. Do a water change before adding your fish.

Best of luck with your new BP's. I know you're going to love them:)
