Water inside my extenal filter...

Just a quick question.
I have a fluval 304 external and it's well matured, about 4 months or so on my tank.
It gets cleaned weekly... However the water inside the canister is brown, when my tank is clear / small tint of brown.

Am I supose to empty the filter water and fill it with tank water when I clean it?
I've always just left it thinking it's the 'benefical bacteria' that are browning it....
Any ideas? Cheers.

Oh, and water is tested often and nothing wrong with it.

Yes you need to dump the dirty water and fill it with clean water. the bacteria is actually in the white cylinder media.

I have the same external Fluval 304. I clean it about once every 3 or 4 months. I disposed of the carbon puches and just filled it with the white porous cylinders. I wash them off a little and put them back in and then fill it with water. Works great. Had it for over a year.

I work in a fish store! We have 3 fluval display tanks all with externals, and it doesn't happen to any of them!
That's why I thought i'd ask, seems odd.

Thats utterly weird. I've never heard of that happening. And yes to your questiion. You are supposed to empty the filter
when you clean it. Try that and if that doesn't work contact a local pet store clerk. Best of Luck!!!
