for the misspelled word
the type of pot is a terra-cotta pot easily found in any gardening section of a store
Home Depot
i wanted a decorative thing that my BP could hide in but i still wanted to see them, so i reaserchd a little bit and found out that a teracots pot is both decorative and a great hiding place,
so i got one that would fit into my 29gal tank and when i put it in my fish went staright to it and all squeeze in it (and they arnt small) and whats great is (as i already said) it looks great, my fish love it and i can still see them. and to make it look better i got a pack of plastic flowers and put them around the pot
and then just recently i got the smallest pot and put it in for my albino frog that i just got.
IMPORTANT
IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS YOU MUST SOAK THE POT IN A BUCKET WITH THE WATER FROM YOUR TANK FOR 24 HOURS (ONLY ENOUGH WATER TO COVER THE POT) AND LET IT SOAK FOR 24 HOURS SO THAT ALL THE CHEMICALS REALESE, AND AFTER U STICK THE POT IN UR TANK DO NOT POUR THE WATER THE POT SOAKED IN BACK INTO UR TANK PUT NEWLY MADE WATER IN
rocks
If you had to make a choice, which do you think is most important, hiding places or space for swimming?
Swimming Space or Hiding Place?
That's a toughie Shaz. They are both so important to BP's.
In the beginning I only had a rock formation in my tank. Over the course of time, I have added 3 additional décor/hiding places. The three dominate fish have claimed the hiding places for themselves. The other three have their own hiding places within the tank. Whenever they are startled or sleeping, each fish will go to his/her designated area. I noticed a lot of people state that their fish will all sleep together at night. For me, that's not the case. I guess my fish are very independent and like to assert their individuality.lol! They also seem to be more confident. So, each having his very own place in the tank seems to be important to the fish. In addition, there is very little aggression/lip locking in the tank. The only time there is a bit of a scuffle is when a more submissive fish asserts himself and tries to overtake one of the hiding places. But, that is very rare.
Having this many hiding places in the tank has cut down on the swimming area at the bottom of the tank. The way I've gotten around that is not having anything on the bottom of the tank taller than 4 inches. This way they are free to swim the entire tank without obstruction, other than one plant in the back. I was going to remove it. But, they hang out in it a lot during the day. So, I've left it for now.
As you know, I am relatively new to BP's. Having mine for about a year. You have much more experience than I do. I would love to know what your opinion is.
swimming or hiding places
I think that as long as there are special places for all the fish, then you should give them more room for swimming, I am guilty of providing more than they need because it looks nice, fish dont care whether their hiding places are beautiful castles or plumbers drainage tubes, likewise they dont care if you give them names or not, or who feeds them, as long as they get fed, what matters to them is the right conditions, I give my fish very human attributes, a tank with just gravel to dig in, a rock or cave to call their own, the right food, tankmates ,and water, is really all they need, a bigger tank wouldent go amiss though!!!!
Re: Rocks
I think I've spent more money on hiding places/aquarium decor for my BP's than I have my wardrobe. lol!! The funny thing is, their favorite hiding place was the least exspensive item I've purchased. It's a log I bought at PetSmart. They love it!! They are able to get inside and peak out of a hole in the log.
If your BP's are on the large size, they probably won't fit. My two largest are out growing their log. Somehow they still seem to squeeze themselves into it. One of these days they're not going to be able to get out. lol!! My largest are about 4 inches long nose to the tip of their tail.
