How do I tell a male from female

Hello everyone I am new to this and it is my first time keeping fish. I went to a pet store with my girlfriend and fell in love with the parrot fish... I think it is just me but I think they look like they are smiling...Lol! no one else notices this but it was the first thing that stood out to me! Anywyays I have hundreds of questions about them such as how to tell which is male a nd female and whether or not it is okay to have just one parrot in a tank or if they should be paired up? I had 2 of them but 2 weeks after introducing them to there new tank one got ich and died, should I get the survivor another friend or is it okay by itself...
Thanks Mike

Re: How do I tell a male from female

Black spots could be because of stress or bad water quality

Try making partial water changes and the black spots should dissappear. Don't panik.

Black spot is not a disease but a state.

Black spot diease

I Changed my tank the other day. and i parrot startes turning black in certain places This is the 2 time it has happened could you give me some kind of inormation on why it happens

black spots

can you tell us exactly what you do when you change your tank?

Re: How do I tell a male from female

it isn't that hard once your fish hit 3 inches or so. parrot breeding tubes are pretty big and are partially out most of the time. a fat rounded U shaped tube is female. a thinner, pointier V shaped is a male. the fins mean nothing.

male and female

males have pointed breeding tubes and females have u shaped ones, difficult to tell unless in breeding mode ( males are nearly always sterile) you need at least a 30 gal tank(soon as poss) for one parrot,(fine on its own) but if you can stretch to a 40 gal I think two are better, but before you do anything, find out all you can about ich,see the link at the bottom of this page) it is easily treatable but infectious, treat the remaining fish, do partial water changes, test your water weekly, and wait a while before adding anything else (someone else like to help me out about the cycle of ich,) use the time to read everything you can about parrotfish and the correct way to look after them, weekly, partical water changes are the most important basic requirment of fish keeping, how long did you cycle your tank for before adding your fish,(my fish are extra smilley!)
