sand or gravel?
If you decide on sand I would only buy aquarium sand because I wouldn't want to put anything that was not made for fish in there and if you think about the cost, well, once its in there, that's it for a long time, I like a medium crushed gravel, I found that sand tends to get sucked into airlines and reduces the air flow, plus with sand the waste lies on the top, although with gravel, I think you need to vacuum more thoughly as the waste falls into it, with sand or fine gravel ,both can get suctioned up, have you got the vacuuming attachment? just lift it up from the tank floor and the sand falls back in,the only thing to consider with gravel is if you have catfish, you need the right size of grain because of their little whiskers(cant think of what the right name is)

sand or gravel
If you do want to mix, chose one bag sand to two bags of gravel, but take a look at crushed gravel first before you make your mind up, my vac is like a big tube on the end of the tubing and is shaped sort of oval, when you vac you just lightly go over the surface, in fact, sometimes you just need to hover over the surface, sometimes you will see the sand/gravel begin to swirl up inside the tube, when this happens just lift the tube up slowly until it falls back in, you don't have to stop or remove the vac from the tank and this wont stop your syphon,if you are still unsure , put a net over the other end(the one that goes into the bucket, ) it will catch any sand (but also any waste,)you would then have to clean it again,if I can help any way you can send a private message, I like dark gravel,
