sand
I wanted to use sand, but it was really expensive for the aquarium sand. And I was afraid to use anything that would be really hard to rinse out. So I decided on a mix of gravel that I got at home depot for $3 a bag. I used one bag of small gravel (not as small as the aquarium gravel, but about the size of large peas) and one and half bags of larger gravel (ranging from a quarter to a half-dollar size). It took a lot of rinsing to get it clean, but it works great. It gives my dig happy parrots small enough gravel to move around without digging huge holes. It is a natural beige color that looks really sharp in my tank with the Texas holy stone, driftwood, gray cave thingy and all the green (plastic) plants. I should post a photo because it looks so good I want to move in there! Good luck with your set up.
sand?
I use a fine crushed gravel, its dark grey, from the local aquarium store, I never use anything that isn't specifically for fish tank use, I also have a plain black background , the orange of the fish and the green of the plants really stand out, its not that cheap but has lasted for a long time
